I form sculptures out of paper maché, plaster, wood, metal, and found objects. For the
past fifteen years, I have explored many artistic mediums including found object
sculptures, dolls, boxes, collage, and altars. With my current body of work I feel I have
found a medium that integrates my previous modes of expression and fully articulates
my artistic vision. I am working on a series of mythical beings inspired by folklore,
archetypes and my own experiences. The process of using high quality paper to color
the sculptures as opposed to painting them was influenced by the art of papering boxes
that I learned while living in South Korea in 2005.
Making art is a very instinctive process for me. The gestures, colors, and objects in my
sculptures are both deliberately and intuitively chosen for their symbolic meaning. My
hands follow the rhythm of my heart, listening closely for the next step. The act of
creating allows the unconscious knowledge of my present state of mind to emerge
which in turn allows me to better comprehend the events of my life.
I am greatly affected by place: I have traveled extensively throughout Southeast and
Central Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, Central America and the United States. At the
same time, I am strongly rooted in the trees, mountains, and waters of the Northwest.
My art holds memories of my experiences and my connections to these different
landscapes. For me, making art is a mindfulness practice: it brings me home to the
present moment.
